The Blue Torch Chapter of the National Honor Society was organized in 1959. The purpose of the chapter is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develpo character in the students of Sedan High School. The criteria and procedures for membership to the Blue Torch Chapter of NHS are as follows: (1) A student must have been in attendace at Sedan High School the equivalent of at least one semester. (2) A student must have attained the status of at least a Junior in high school. (3) Candidates must have attained a minimumk cumulative grade point average of 3.33 on a 4.0 scale, calculated on those subjects considered "academic solids". The Executive Council, which consists of four classroom instructors and the Principal, with the chapter sponsor serving as ex-officio member, will determin ewhich subjects are considered "academic solids" for use in the process of NHS eligibility. (4) Following notification of "academic eligibility" the student must make written application for membership. (5) The Executive Council shall review applicants, and by majority \vote will make the final determination of new members and dismissal of current members based upon scholarship, leadership, character, and service. *** Academic eligibility begins following the first semester of the student's junior year. *** A student not eligible or approved during his/her junior year may become eligible and reapply during his/her senior year. |
